Steph Kunze

February 6 - March 30    North Central Library

Tiny, fierce, and incredibly beautiful, thousands of butterfly and moth species make their home in the taiga, a biome characterized by long, brutal winters and short, mild summers. In her "Taiga Series," Steph Kunze brings attention to these often overlooked insects, representing species from as far north as the taiga-tundra ecotone to as far south as the deciduous-coniferous mixed forests. Working in traditional mixed media, she hand draws each species onto fabric, cuts it out, and adheres it to a textile background. Surrounding the species, she incorporates additional hand-drawn and fiber collage elements that complement the species’ distinct physical traits or habitat. As a whole, the series acts as a quilt of varying textures, colors, shapes, and patterns, inviting viewers to slow down and take notice of these fascinating creatures.
